Which category you fall into determines which seats appear in your choice list and how you rank against other candidates for them.
In practical terms this means two things. First, the domicile declaration in your application is not a formality — it is the single most consequential field you fill. Second, you must be able to document the category you claim at verification; an undocumented claim is worse than a modest one, because it can cost your candidature entirely.
Each cycle's information bulletin sets out the categories, the qualifying conditions and the acceptable proofs. If your situation is unusual — schooling split across states, parents transferred mid-course, recently relocated family — resolve the question with WBMCC's published rules before you register, not at the verification desk.

- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates (Class 10 certificate is commonly used for date-of-birth proof)
- Residence / domicile proof accepted for your claimed category
- Caste or category certificate in the West Bengal-prescribed format, where applicable
