Private vs Deemed MBBS Fees 2026 — The Real Numbers
Fee bands for government, private, deemed and NRI quota MBBS — and what a quoted package figure leaves out.
Almost every family that ends up in a private or deemed medical college underestimated the cost — not because anyone lied to them, but because they compared a quoted first-year tuition figure against a five-and-a-half year commitment. This guide gives honest bands, then shows you exactly what the quoted figure leaves out.
Medical college fees in India are set by state fee regulatory committees (for private colleges) and by universities themselves (for deemed institutions), and they are revised — and sometimes litigated — between cycles. Every figure on this page is an indicative band based on recent years, published to tell you what order of magnitude to plan for. The only binding number is the current official fee notification for the specific college and seat category. We do not quote per-college fees, and neither should anyone advising you casually.
The Four Cost Tiers
| Tier | Who counsels it | Indicative annual tuition | Indicative total course outflow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government college | MCC (15% AIQ) + state authority (85%) | ₹10,000 – ₹1 lakh | Well under ₹10 lakh including hostel in most states |
| Private college — state quota | State counselling authority | Low-to-mid single-digit lakh | Roughly ₹30 lakh – ₹70 lakh |
| Private college — management quota | State authority / institution per state rules | High single-digit to mid-teens lakh | Roughly ₹60 lakh – ₹1 crore |
| Deemed university | MCC (deemed counselling) | High-teens to high-twenties lakh | Frequently ₹1 crore – ₹1.5 crore |

The step from government to private is large. The step from private to deemed is larger still, and it is the one families consistently underestimate — because deemed universities are not bound by a state fee committee in the way private colleges are. Our deemed university counselling guide covers how that track works and when it is genuinely the right call.
NRI Quota: A Separate Currency Altogether
NRI seats are typically about 15% of intake in many private and deemed institutions and are priced in dollars or at dollar-equivalent rupee levels:
| Institution type | Indicative NRI annual fee |
|---|---|
| Government medical college NRI seats (where offered) | Roughly US$15,000 – US$30,000 |
| Private medical college NRI seats | Roughly US$25,000 – US$45,000 |
| Deemed university NRI seats | Roughly US$35,000 – US$60,000, higher at the top end |

NRI eligibility, sponsorship rules and documentation are strict and are checked at verification — a seat you are not properly eligible for can be cancelled after allotment. Full treatment in our NRI quota MBBS guide.
Regional Patterns Worth Knowing
- South India concentrates the largest deemed university cluster in the country, which is why "deemed" and "expensive" have become synonymous in candidate conversation — and also why the widest range of private options sits there.
- Central and northern states with strong fee-committee regulation tend to produce more predictable private state-quota fees, though management-quota levels still vary sharply.
- Government tuition is low everywhere, but hostel, mess and university charges differ enough to matter over five and a half years.
Real institutions demonstrate the spread: total course fees at Indian medical colleges have been reported ranging from under ₹1 lakh at the most heavily subsidised institutions to well past ₹1 crore at the most expensive deemed universities. That is a hundred-fold range for the same MBBS degree.
What a Quoted "Package" Figure Hides
When a college, consultant or agent quotes you a number, assume it is tuition for year one and nothing else. Here is what routinely sits outside it:
| Cost head | Typically included in the quote? | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel & mess | Usually not | Annual charge, and whether hostel is compulsory |
| Annual fee escalation | Almost never | Is there a fixed percentage escalation clause per year? |
| Caution / security deposit | No | Amount, and whether it is refundable at course end |
| University registration & exam fees | No | Per-year and per-exam charges across all years |
| Counselling security deposit | No — this is separate from the college | See our deposit guide |
| Internship-year charges | Rarely | Whether the internship year carries its own fee |
| Miscellaneous / development heads | Varies | Ask for the itemised fee structure, not a single number |

"Please give me, in writing, the total amount payable from admission to internship completion, itemised by year and head." A legitimate institution will produce it. If the answer is a verbal round number and a request to pay quickly, treat that as the answer to a different question.
Anti-Scam Rules That Cost Nothing to Follow
- Confirm the college's NMC recognition for the current admission year before anything else.
- Pay only through the official counselling authority or the institution's verified banking channel. Never to an individual, and never in cash.
- Cross-check the quoted fee against the official notification — the state fee committee's for a private college, the university's own published structure for a deemed institution.
- Ignore anyone promising a "guaranteed seat" outside the counselling process. Seats are allotted on merit through the published rounds; a guarantee is a sales line, not a mechanism.
- Get the loan pre-assessed against the total course cost, not the first year, before you accept a high-fee seat.
Is an Expensive Seat Ever Worth It?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on arithmetic rather than sentiment. A deemed seat at ₹1.2 crore total is worth taking if the realistic alternative is dropping a year with no assurance of a better outcome and the family can fund it without mortgaging its stability. It is not worth taking to avoid a two-year bonded government seat that would cost ₹5 lakh in total — see our bond policy guide for that comparison done properly.

MBBS Fees — FAQs
What is the difference between a private and a deemed medical college?
A private medical college is affiliated to a state university and its state-quota seats are counselled by the state authority at fees notified by that state. A deemed university has degree-granting status of its own, is not bound by a state fee committee in the same way, and its seats are counselled centrally by MCC. That difference in regulation is the main reason deemed fees are generally higher than private fees.
How much does private MBBS cost per year in India?
Private medical college tuition varies widely by state and seat category. State-quota seats in private colleges commonly fall in a low-to-mid single-digit lakh range per year, while management-quota seats at the same colleges run considerably higher. These are indicative bands only — the binding figure is your state fee regulator's current notification for that specific college.
How much do deemed university MBBS seats cost?
Deemed university MBBS tuition is generally in the high-teens to high-twenties lakh per year range, with the most expensive institutions higher still, meaning total course costs frequently run past a crore once hostel and other charges are included. Deemed fees are published by each university and revised periodically, so verify against the university's own current fee notification.
What does a quoted MBBS package figure leave out?
Package figures typically quote tuition only, and often only the first year's tuition. They commonly exclude hostel and mess charges, a refundable or non-refundable caution deposit, university registration and examination fees, annual fee escalation, and the counselling security deposit. Ask for the total five-and-a-half-year outflow in writing before comparing two offers.
Is an education loan available for private and deemed MBBS?
Education loans are commonly available for recognised Indian medical programmes, but sanctioned amounts, collateral requirements and disbursal schedules vary by lender and by the total course cost. Because deemed course costs frequently exceed unsecured lending limits, families should get the loan pre-assessed against the full course cost before accepting a high-fee seat, not after.
