JoSAA and CSAB both allocate seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs — so students understandably confuse the two. They are not alternatives; they are two sequential stages of the same NIT+ system. Understanding what separates them can be the difference between securing a great seat and missing your window entirely.
The Big Picture: One System, Two Stages
Think of JoSAA and CSAB as chapters one and two of a single book. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) runs the main counselling rounds — typically five to six — during which the bulk of NIT+, IIT, and ISM seats are allocated. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) then picks up whatever seats remain vacant in the NIT+ system after JoSAA ends and runs two special rounds to fill them.
The same rank list, the same reservation categories, and largely the same set of institutes apply to both — but the rules around registration, choice lists, and seat withdrawal differ in ways that matter a great deal.

Institutes: Where They Overlap and Where They Don't
The most important difference for most students is that CSAB does not cover IITs or ISM Dhanbad. Those are allocated exclusively through JoSAA based on JEE Advanced rank. If your aim is an IIT, CSAB is irrelevant to you.
For the NIT+ system — the 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and around 45 GFTIs — both counsellings operate on the same pool of institutes. The critical difference is that CSAB only has vacant seats, which are typically in less-preferred branches or less central-location institutes. Flagship branches at top NITs usually fill in JoSAA itself.
Registration: Why "Carryover" Is a Myth
In JoSAA, one registration covers all five or six rounds. You fill your choices once and modify them before each round's lock date. In CSAB, you start from scratch — your JoSAA username, password, and preferences are completely irrelevant on the CSAB portal.
The Choice-List Reset
In JoSAA, your choice list persists and you can tweak it before each round's lock deadline. In CSAB, you build a new list from whatever vacant seats are on offer at that point. This means:
- You cannot "roll over" a preferred choice that was unavailable in JoSAA; if it's now vacant in CSAB, great — but you need to find and add it manually.
- The CSAB seat pool is smaller and the options may be different from what you saw during JoSAA. Approach the list with fresh eyes.
- Prioritise ruthlessly — if a seat is not genuinely better than what you already have, there is no point in accepting it.
Seat Withdrawal: The Critical Difference
This is where many students make costly mistakes. In JoSAA, the Float and Slide options give you a degree of flexibility to chase a better allotment without permanently surrendering your current seat. CSAB's rules are stricter in a particular way: accepting a CSAB seat may permanently release any seat you were holding from JoSAA, with no mechanism to reverse that decision.

Who Should Actually Care About CSAB?
CSAB is particularly relevant for three groups of students:
- Students who did not get any NIT+ seat in JoSAA — perhaps their rank was just outside the closing rank for their preferred choices in every round. CSAB gives them another shot at seats that opened up.
- Students who got a seat in JoSAA but want an upgrade — maybe a better branch, a better NIT, or a closer location. CSAB Round 1 and Round 2 can sometimes yield a meaningful improvement.
- Students who did not participate in JoSAA at all — perhaps they were waiting for another counselling's results. As long as they are eligible for the NIT+ system, they can register fresh for CSAB.
