Freeze, Float & Slide — Which Should You Choose?
The moment JoSAA allots you a seat, it asks one deceptively simple question: Freeze, Float, or Slide? Pick wrong and you either lose a better seat you could have had — or gamble away a good one. Here is what each option actually does, in plain English.
The Three Options in One Line Each

Freeze — "I'm Happy, Lock It"
Choosing Freeze tells JoSAA you are completely satisfied. Your seat is confirmed and you are removed from all future upgrade rounds. It is irreversible — you cannot switch to Float or Slide later.
Choose Freeze when: you got your top choice (or close to it), or you would rather not risk any change to a branch/college you are genuinely happy with.
Float — "Upgrade Me Anywhere Better"
Float keeps your current seat safe as a backup while JoSAA tries to push you up to any higher-ranked choice on your list — that could be a different (better) college or a better branch. If a higher choice opens up in a later round, you are moved automatically and your old seat is released.
Choose Float when: your allotted seat is acceptable but several choices above it would make you happier and you want the maximum chance to climb.
Slide — "Better Branch, Same College"
Slide is the conservative cousin of Float. You keep your seat and ask only for an upgrade within the same institute — usually a better branch in the same college. You will never be moved to a different college.
Choose Slide when: you love the college and only want a better branch in it, without any chance of being shifted elsewhere.
A Quick Worked Example
Say your choice list was: (1) NIT Trichy CSE, (2) NIT Warangal CSE, (3) NIT Trichy ECE, and you were allotted choice 3 — NIT Trichy ECE in Round 1.
- Freeze: you keep NIT Trichy ECE. Done.
- Float: JoSAA will try to move you up to NIT Warangal CSE or NIT Trichy CSE if seats open in Round 2+.
- Slide: JoSAA will only try to move you to NIT Trichy CSE (same college, higher choice) — never to Warangal.

What does Freeze mean in JoSAA?
