JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two different exams — but they feed into a single, unified counselling platform called JoSAA. Understanding how the two exams connect to different sets of colleges, and how JoSAA handles both simultaneously, is essential before you start filling choices. The Core Distinction: Which Exam Opens Which Colleges
The relationship between the two exams and their respective college systems is straightforward once you see it clearly:

The critical point: JEE Advanced is not a separate counselling process. It simply expands your eligible choices within JoSAA to include IITs. What Is JoSAA, and How Does It Handle Both?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the centralised platform — jointly run by NTA and IIT council — that conducts seat allocation for the entire NIT+ system and all IITs. It runs approximately 5–6 rounds of allotment each year. All candidates — whether qualified only in JEE Main, or also in JEE Advanced — participate through the same portal: josaa.nic.in.
The process is: register → verify documents → fill choices → receive round-wise allotment → accept, float, or freeze your seat. The platform is the same regardless of which exam you qualified; only the pool of available choices differs.
The Prerequisite Chain: Main Before Advanced
JEE Advanced cannot be attempted without first qualifying JEE Main (clearing the cut-off for the top 2.5 lakh or so candidates, subject to category reservation). This means:
- All JEE Advanced qualifiers automatically have a JEE Main rank.
- In JoSAA, a student who qualified Advanced can fill both IIT and NIT/IIIT/GFTI preferences in the same list.
- A student who qualified only Main can fill NIT/IIIT/GFTI preferences but cannot select IIT options.
How Rank Is Used for Each System
This is another major source of confusion:
- IIT seats in JoSAA — allocated on the basis of your JEE Advanced rank (CRL and category rank from Advanced). Your JEE Main rank is irrelevant for IIT allocation.
- NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats in JoSAA — allocated on the basis of your JEE Main rank (CRL and category rank from Main). Your JEE Advanced rank plays no role here.
This means a JEE Advanced qualifier who wants an NIT is competing in the same NIT pool as everyone else with a JEE Main rank — Advanced rank gives no additional advantage for NIT seats.
Choice Filling When You Have Both Ranks
If you qualified JEE Advanced, you have access to a much larger pool of choices in JoSAA. This is an advantage — but it also makes choice-filling more complex. A few principles:
- Fill your genuine preference order across all institutions, not just IITs at the top and NITs as an afterthought. JoSAA allocates the best available seat on your list, round by round.
- If an IIT programme is your true preference, rank it above NIT options. If a specific NIT CS seat is preferable to a less-desired IIT programme, rank it accordingly.

State Counselling: A Separate Track
JoSAA only covers IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. It has no role in state college admissions. If you want to apply to colleges under JAC Delhi (DTU, NSUT, IIIT Delhi), IPU, or any state-level university, those are entirely separate counselling processes with their own registration, timelines, and eligibility criteria. You can — and usually should — register for state counselling in parallel with JoSAA, since timelines often overlap.
After JoSAA: The CSAB Route
Once all JoSAA rounds conclude, any seats remaining vacant in the NIT+ system (not IITs) go to CSAB Special Rounds.
